DESCRIPTION:Saturday, April 1, 2023 – 8:00am to 4:00pm\nREGISTRATION CLOSES MARCH 25TH!\n\nWHO IT’S FOR\nAnyone who wants to volunteer as a crew member on local TPE chapter burns, or who is just interested in learning more about prescribed burns.\nWHAT YOU’LL LEARN\nChapter experts will cover the basics of fire behavior and management. There will be hands-on experience with tools, which you will use to ignite and extinguish a grass fire (weather permitting).\nWHAT TO BRING\nNatural fiber clothing (cotton or wool, not polyester or other synthetics) and leather boots are required. Bring leather or cotton gloves, a cap and bandana.\nBring your own bag lunch.\nYou must be 18 years of age to take the course, or 16 years old with parental authorization. You will be asked to sign a liability waiver and health self- assessment form.\nAGENDA\n8:00 – Check-in\n8:30 – Welcome & Introduction\n8:45 – Fire Ecology: Why Burn? – Presented by Mark Leach\n9:30 – Weather and Fire Behavior – Presented by Kathy Ruggles\n10:15 – Break (15 minutes)\n10:30 – Equipment and PPE – Presented by John Thomas\n10:45 – Burn Plans – Presented by Julia Chapman\n11:00 – Ignition Patterns and Procedures – Presented by Keith Gilland\n11:45 – Questions\n12:00 – Break for lunch and travel to Dobbs Landing (7573 850th Ave, Colfax, WI 54730 – follow gravel easement road back to parking area)\n1:00 – Meet at Dobbs Landing for field portion\nPARKING\nUse Lot 18 off 10th Ave (east of Jarvis Hall). Parking is free on weekends.\nIn case of inclement weather\nThe classroom portion (8am-12pm) will be held regardless of weather.\nIn case of rain or unsuitable weather, April 2, 8, and 9 will be potential alternative dates for the field portion of the class.
