GLACIAL PRAIRIE WORK PARTY
Neda Mine Work Day
Saturday, July 19 – 9:00 a.m. to Noon
Location: Neda Mine, Dodge County, WI
Come help with this very important work day!
Neda Mine is one of the most important bat hibernacula sites in the Midwest- and is used by little brown bats, big brown bats, northern long-eared bats, and tricolored bats (formerly called eastern pipistrelles).
In 2015, the fungus that causes white-nose syndrome (WNS) was detected at this site. WNS caused a severe decline in cave bat populations in the state since its arrival. The WI DNR has been monitoring the populations to watch for signs of recovery- and many bats still use the Neda Mine site.
Work will likely include removing woody stems/brush, parsnip, and burdock, as well as whatever other site improvements will make the site better for the bats.
DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Moderate (hilly terrain)
