About Our Chapter
Established in 2011, the Glacial Prairie Chapter of The Prairie Enthusiasts is dedicated to conserving and restoring prairie, oak savanna, and other associated ecosystems across southeast Wisconsin, encompassing Dodge, Jefferson, Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Walworth, and Waukesha Counties. Our name, “Glacial Prairie,” honors the stunning, historic glacial till and landforms in our region as well as the diverse fire-dependent ecosystems we work to protect. With less than 0.1% of these vital ecosystems remaining in Wisconsin and our Chapter being situated in the state’s fastest growing region, our efforts are more crucial now than ever before.
In Southeast Wisconsin, our remaining prairie and related ecosystems are biodiversity hotspots, home to over 400 native plant species, including rare orchids and milkweeds. These fire-dependent ecosystems support a variety of insects, including key pollinators, and continue to provide habitat for endangered grassland birds, state-threatened bats, and various reptiles and amphibians. Underground, these ecosystems are equally important, with 75-80% of their biomass actually in deep root systems that aid in flood control, soil stabilization, water filtration, and carbon storage. In response to the pressures from development and agriculture, protecting these rare places is essential for preserving their ecological functions and the diverse wildlife that call it home.
We help steward several properties in the chapter area. Additionally, we are fortunate to collaborate with the WDNR State Natural Areas Volunteer Program, which allows us to make significant improvements to several State Natural Areas, including Scuppernong Springs, Lulu Lake, and Genesee Oak Opening and Fen.
We encourage everyone to help manage these vital ecosystems, regardless of your experience level. Whether you’re new to volunteering or a seasoned participant, our Work Parties and events are designed to be welcoming and accessible. We provide instruction and all necessary equipment, so you don’t need any prior experience to get involved. These opportunities not only allow you to explore some of our most unique sites but also play a crucial role in the stewardship efforts that keep them healthy and vibrant. Join us and be part of our mission to preserve these important landscapes!
Volunteer activities span the entire year and include:
- Prescribed Burns: Conducting controlled burns and training new burn crew members.
- Weed and Brush Management: Removing invasive species and brush.
- Native Planting: Planting native plant species local to our region to help with biodiversity.
- Seed Work: Collecting, processing, and spreading seeds throughout the year.
- Field Work: Including plant and animal surveys, fire breaks, and monitoring.
- Community Engagement: Guiding public tours, providing educational presentations, and participating in outreach events.
The Glacial Prairie Chapter is deeply committed to the belief that education plays a vital role in safeguarding these rare ecosystems. In addition to our work with established conservation areas, we are dedicated to fostering a passion for nature in the next generation of land stewards, and work with students and groups of all ages in hands-on conservation activities.
