MINNESOTA DRIFTLESS WORK PARTY
Garvin Heights Work Day: Foliar Treatment of Buckthorn
Wednesday, October 1 – 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Location: Garvin Heights in Winona, MN
Join us for a fall workday at Garvin Heights to foliar treat buckthorn that has re-sprouted in and along the fire breaks of our three burn units, spraying buckthorn along the west side of the overlook parking lot and along the west side of the paved trail out to the overlook. Because buckthorn holds on to its leaves longer than most of our native plants, the buckthorn should still have green leaves to spray while most other plants will have dropped their leaves or have gone dormant. We will be using Garlon 4 at 2.5oz to each gallon of water for the foliar treatment.
If we have time we will also cut and treat buckthorn that is growing around smaller oaks in our new Lower Bluff Prairie burn unit. Cleaning out thick shrubbery around these smaller oaks will protect them from too intense of a prescribed fire which we intend to have early spring 2026.
The plant ecology class from Winona State University taught by Dr. Austin Yantes will be participating in this workday. This will give us an opportunity to split into groups. Anyone familiar with our fire breaks at Garvin Heights could help lead one of the work groups.
