Description
The Makutu Herbicide Wand derives its name from the Maori term for “magic that kills”. The Makutu is designed to be used with either oil-soluble or water-soluble herbicides to treat the cut stems and trunks of woody vegetation up to 1.5 inches in diameter. If using both water-soluble and oil-soluble herbicides separate Makutus are recommended. Rinsing the Makutu to change herbicides raises concerns about disposal of the contents in an environmentally safe manner.
The Makutu:
- uses herbicides sparingly, yet effectively
- minimizes chances of herbicide coming in physical contact with the person applying it
- reduces likelihood of collateral damage when the Makutu is used correctly
- has a sturdy design when used according to instructions
- has a durable wick that is easy and inexpensive to replace
The Makutu is offered in two versions:
- the short version is 24 1/2 inches overall, has a capacity of 7 ounces of herbicide, and is designed to enable the user to cut small woody vegetation with a hand pruner while applying herbicide with the other hand. It also is useful in treating the basal bark of small, smooth-stemmed woody plants
- the long version is 50 inches overall, has a capacity of 20 ounces, and is designed for cut stem treatment used in conjunction with someone operating a clearing saw.
- both versions may be useful in treating the basal rosettes of herbaceous plants such as teasel, mullein, thistles, spotted knapweed, etc. The wick is durable and both inexpensive and easy to make when it needs replacement.
While both models are quite sturdy, that does not mean indestructible. Accidents happen! When they do,
owners can be assured that any broken component of the Makutu body can be replaced at actual cost plus shipping. Supplies are purchased in bulk and all labor is donated, whether assembling a new Makutu, replacing a broken component, or packing and shipping. Simply email aim68@icloud.com to arrange replacement and to obtain a quote on the total cost. We place a high value on land stewardship and want stewards to have the best possible herbicide wand and to use it often!
5% Discounts Available For Purchase of Three Or More Makutus (any model or combination thereof):
- for public agencies, schools, and universities
- for nonprofit organizations
- Simply email aim68@icloud.com before ordering to secure the discount upon verification.
Important Notice:
Due to unprecedented demand, we will not be able to take or fill orders May 1 through July 15. We are busy volunteers in a variety of settings and need time to create a sufficient inventory! Building Makutus on demand has become a very heavy lift for the two of us. In addition, we need to build Makutus only when we can open windows as the primer and cement (the two are essentially a form of epoxy) are quite odoriferous until dried and likely not producing beneficial fumes. We will no longer build them year-round for that reason, although we will continue to produce and ship replacement components on an as needed basis. Fortunately, the years have demonstrated that this is a service rarely requested.
