SOUTHWEST WISCONSIN FIELD TRIP

Site Tours of Prairies

Saturday, August 2 – 10:00 a.m.

Location: Properties of Marjie Bennett and Jack Kussmaul

Join us for two site tours on Saturday, August 2. We will visit the Jack Kussmaul property near Millville and the Marjie Bennett property near Wyalusing. The properties are only about ten miles apart to make it easier for people to visit both sites the same day.

The Kussmaul property consists of 97 acres overlooking the Wisconsin River. It contains a variety of environments, including prairie, woodland and savanna. The environments range from north facing bluffs to south facing sandy sand. Restoration work has been ongoing for 25 years. Trails are mostly rolling, though there is one rather steep stretch that is not too long.

The tour will start at 10 am. There is a bathroom in the house on the property. There will be tables and chairs for your picnic lunches overlooking the river following the hike and Jack will offer ice cream.

The Bennett property consists of 11 acres of planted prairie. Controlled burns and much human labor have helped to control the invasive species. Trails around the prairie are easy walking. Come and enjoy the summer colors and learn what has worked with this planting and lessons learned through the years.

We hope that many of you can join us on these outstanding prairies.
