The Empire-Sauk Chapter of The Prairie Enthusiasts is offering basic crew training for those interested in prescribed fire. This 1-day class is for people without previous experience in prescribed fire or who want a refresher. Successful participation in this training program (classroom and live fire training), plus helping on two TPE burns as an apprentice, provides qualifications to be a crew member on TPE burns. Class taught by: Rob Baller, Scott Fulton, Andy Sleger, and Rob Schubert.

Bring your own sack lunch. The class will be indoors and starts promptly at 9 AM. (Note – Library opens to the public at 10 AM, so please enter at the East Door).

Topics addressed:

• Why we burn

• Fire behavior – fuels, weather, topography

• Ignition techniques

• Suppression techniques

• Safety on the fire line

• Crew roles

A separate required live fire training will be offered within a few weeks of the class. Attendees will be notified, but the class date is weather dependent. Live fire training will be held twice, a few hours in the morning and again after lunch. Live fire training will be held at Mounds View Grassland, 8624 Reilly Rd, south of Blue Mounds, WI.

Contact Rob Baller (robertballer@outlook.com or 608-370-9064) for questions or more information.

The event is finished.
