Field Trip: Introduction to Grassland Birds

Saturday, June 22 – 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Location: Hanley Farm

Come hike into the Hanley Farm Prairie unit of TPE’s Mounds View Grassland preserve where you will experience and learn about birds that require and depend upon open treed grassland habitat, many of which are in decline and considered Species of Greatest Conservation need. Grassland specialists we are likely to see and hear include meadowlark, bobolink, dickcissel, upland sandpiper, northern harrier, Henslow’s sparrow, and grasshopper sparrow, along with some species of brush and savanna habitat.

WHAT TO WEAR/BRING:

Dress for the weather and bring water. Be prepared for a long hike (some off trail) and bring binoculars.

WORK PARTY LEADER:

If you plan to attend, please let the trip leader know at least 12 hours in advance, in case of last-minute changes in the schedule or cancelation due to severe weather. Also contact them if you have questions.

DIRECTIONS:

From the intersection of US Hwy 18-151 and County F (south of Blue Mounds in western Dane County), take F south for 4.4 miles.  Two hundred yards past address 2906, park along the west side of the road.   (Note: A half mile down F from 18-151, pay close attention to the road signs, for F turns to the right & the straight ahead road becomes County Z.  Stay on F.)
