Prescribed Burn Training – Chippewa Savannas Chapter

WHO IT’S FOR

Anyone who wants to volunteer as a crew member on local TPE chapter burns, or who is just interested in learning more about prescribed burns.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

Chapter experts will cover the basics of fire behavior and management. There will be hands-on experience with tools, which you will use to ignite and extinguish a grass fire (weather permitting).

WHAT TO BRING

Natural fiber clothing (cotton or wool, not polyester or other synthetics) and leather boots are required. Bring leather or cotton gloves, a cap and bandana.

Bring your own bag lunch.

You must be 18 years of age to take the course, or 16 years old with parental authorization. You will be asked to sign a liability waiver and health self- assessment form.

10:15 – Break (15 minutes)

10:30 – Equipment and PPE – Presented by John Thomas

10:45 – Burn Plans – Presented by Julia Chapman

11:00 – Ignition Patterns and Procedures – Presented by Keith Gilland

11:45 – Questions

12:00 – Break for lunch and travel to Dobbs Landing (7573 850th Ave, Colfax, WI 54730 – follow gravel easement road back to parking area)

1:00 – Meet at Dobbs Landing for field portion

PARKING

Use Lot 18 off 10th Ave (east of Jarvis Hall). Parking is free on weekends.

In case of inclement weather

The classroom portion (8am-12pm) will be held regardless of weather.

In case of rain or unsuitable weather, April 2, 8, and 9 will be potential alternative dates for the field portion of the class. The field portion must be completed in order to qualify as a TPE burn volunteer.
