GLACIAL PRAIRIE CHAPTER WORK DAY

Start the New Year by helping our native ecosystems!

We have a full calendar of workdays during January to work off any holiday excess and care for our environment.

Wear clothes that can get beat up, sturdy boots, work gloves, and bring a water bottle. Tools, safety equipment, and training will be provided at each event.

Sun Jan 29th, Noon – 3pm, Yahtzek’s Fen

Join the Glacial Prairie Chapter volunteers for a work day this Sunday from 9am until noon to work on Yahtzek’s Fen on the property of Becky Fedak and Pete German. We will be cutting and treating glossy buckthorn, an invasive species that threaten the ecological health of the site. This beautiful property is located adjacent to the Genesee Oak Opening and Fen State Natural Area and is one of the premier calcareous fen remnants in SE Wisconsin. See a description of the fen Dan recently surveyed as part of his responsibility as Landowner Services Coordinator for TPE. Here is part of Dan’s description:

The best part of the property is the core of the fen itself, which is the headwaters of Genesee Creek and consists of voluminous springs and several large, sparse areas of specialist fen vegetation, including three WI threatened species (Valeriana uliginosa, Triantha glutinosa, and Eleocharis rostellata). A boat-load of other fen specialists are present. This generally transitions up through more sedge-dominated fen to the wetland boundary, with a few areas better characterized as southern sedge meadow.

Where to meet: Take WI HWY 59 west of Waukesha and follow it west of the roundabout Hwy 83. Turn right on to County Rd ZZ.
