GLACIAL PRAIRIE: NEDA MINE STATE NATURAL AREA WORK PARTY

Neda Mine State Natural Area Work Party

Saturday, July 18 – 9:00 a.m. to Noon

Location: Neda Mine, Dodge County, WI

Help our native bats! Work will include removing invasives, clearing woody debris, and other activities to help keep the mine entrances clear for our bats. The property is closed to public access.

Neda Mine is one of the most important bat hibernacula sites in the Midwest- and is used by little brown bats, big brown bats, northern long-eared bats, and tricolored bats (formerly called eastern pipistrelles).

In 2015, the fungus that causes white-nose syndrome (WNS) was detected at this site. WNS caused a severe decline in cave bat populations in the state since its arrival. The WI DNR has been monitoring the populations to watch for signs of recovery- and many bats still use the Neda Mine site.

DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Moderate (hilly terrain)

WHAT TO BRING:
Come dressed for the weather and brush removal, and be sure to bring water. Long pants, long sleeves, work gloves, and boots are best for parsnip work. You do not need to bring tools, but you can ask Nancy if you have something you would like to bring.
