EMPIRE-SAUK EVENT: BLACKLIGHTING AND SUGARING WORKSHOP
Night-Flying Prairie Insects: Blacklighting and Sugaring Workshop
Wednesday, September 4 – 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Location: Mounds View Grassland
Prairies support an extremely diverse array of insects. We can easily observe many butterflies, bees and other insects during the day but what about the moths? There are more than 10,000 species of moths in North America.
Led by instructor Tim Hansel, this workshop will introduce you to the life cycle, behavior and ecology of prairie moth species. You will learn how to identify moths, particularly some prairie-specialist species which inhabit the Mounds View Grassland. We will demonstrate blacklighting and sugaring to collect and observe moths and other night-flying insects.
Wear clothing appropriate for night hikes on the prairie. Bring a flashlight or headlamp and a camera with a flash. If it is raining on September 4, the event will be postponed until Thursday, September 5.
Registration is limited to 25 participants. The cost of registration is $10.
