EMPIRE-SAUK WORK PARTY

Rattlesnake Ridge Hogback Downed Tree Cleanup

Saturday, December 28 – 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Location: Rattlesnake Ridge Sand Barrens

Last spring’s storms left the hogback with many mature downed trees. We will be cutting them up, hauling brush, and burning.

The hogback is an interesting site with remnant prairie species hanging on on the south slope and a vertical rock wall and steep, rich, wooded slope on the north face. Only two years ago, we began restoration with understory clearing and thinning of the canopy. Last April we had a fabulous prescribed burn. Now we need to clean up the storm damage.

WHAT TO BRING:

Experienced chainsaw operators with their own equipment are needed. Safety chaps and head, ear, and eye protection are required. We also need folks to haul and pile brush. Bring gloves/clothes appropriate for piling brush and burning. Safety glasses suggested. Snacks in the field will be provided!

WORK PARTY LEADER:

Contact Sue Steinmann via email or landline (no texts!) at 608-753-2332.

LOCATION:

7046 Reimann Rd., Arena; take Hwy 14 to Arena; go south on Reimann at Arena Cheese Store (big mouse); go right onto gravel lane at end of road; go left at fork in the lane; continue 1/3 mile through woods to parking area at end of drive.

The event is finished.
