
EMPIRE-SAUK FIELD TRIP
Baltimore Checkerspots and More at Shea Prairie
Friday, June 20 – 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Location: Shea Prairie in Barneveld, WI
The 100-acre Shea Prairie is home to a large population of Baltimores checkerspots and many other butterflies. There will also be wood lilies, white wild indigo, pale-spiked lobelias, and many more prairie wildflowers. This site is a unit of The Prairie Enthusiasts’ 833-acre Mounds View Grassland and has undergone extensive stream and wetland restoration since 2012.
WHAT TO BRING:
Bring water, snacks and dress for the weather. Close focusing binoculars are recommended for butterfly viewing. Be prepared for some off-trail and uphill hiking.

DIRECTIONS:
Address is 3095 Mounds View Road, Barneveld. From US Highway 18/151, a mile and a half west of Blue Mounds, turn south on Mounds View Road. Proceed on Mounds View for 2.5 miles to where it joins briefly with Prairie Grove Rd. Stay with Mounds View and go another 0.7 miles. Look for the kiosk and parking lot on the left.
