Flexing the Mukwonago River’s Mussels

Join The Prairie Enthusiasts, Waukesha County Land Conservancy, WDNR, and staff from Carroll University and the Greene Field Station & Prairie Springs Environmental Education Center, for an engaging educational talk and demonstration on the fascinating native mussels of Wisconsin! Discover the hidden underwater world of these unique creatures and learn about their remarkable features and adaptations. This event is perfect for anyone curious about local wildlife and eager to explore the diversity of Wisconsin’s aquatic ecosystems.

We’ll start the morning off with an educational session (10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.) that will delve into the lives of Wisconsin’s native mussels, highlighting their role in freshwater environments and their intricate adaptations. Led by Dr. Todd Levine, an expert in mussel biology, this talk will blend informative content with interactive demonstrations, allowing attendees to see firsthand the beauty and complexity of these often-overlooked creatures.

Afterward, we’ll be conducting a survey of the mussels in the Mukwonago River (11:00 a.m. to noon) and you’re invited to participate or observe so please dress appropriately in clothes you don’t mind getting wet and shoes you can wade in if you would like to participate.

WHAT TO BRING:

If you plan on participating in the mussels survey, wear clothes and shoes you do not mind getting wet while wading in water.
