Classroom Portion of Prescribed Burn Training
Sunday, March 10 – 7:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Location: Wilson Township Fire Hall, Winona County
A Prairie Enthusiasts prescribed burn crew member training event will take place on March 10 at the Wilson Township Fire Hall in Winona County, MN, from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm. This will be the classroom component of The Prairie Enthusiasts prescribed burn crew member training and a separate equipment field training event will be scheduled for a yet-to-be-determined date as well.
Course topics for the classroom component will include fire ecology, the use of prescribed fire in land management, prescribed burning techniques, safety and PPE, prescribed burn plans, and equipment. Course content is focused on relatively small (1-50 acres) prescribed burns commonly conducted in the Upper Midwest for the restoration and management of prairies and savannas, with an emphasis on the use of hand tools.
The equipment field training component will occur at a yet to be determined date and will allow participants to learn about and practice the use of various hand tools commonly used for relatively small (1-50 acres) prescribed burns in the Upper Midwest.
Completing both components is required to obtain certification of completion of The Prairie Enthusiasts’ prescribed burn crew member training.
If you’d like to participate in the March 10 classroom component of the training, send an email to Kevin O’Brien (EMAIL) to get on the registration list. The class has a maximum capacity of 20 people so register with Kevin soon before the class is full.
