PRAIRIE BLUFF WORK PARTY

Brush & Tree Clearing

Thursday, January 4 – 10:00 a.m.

Location: Gap Prairie

A large ridge runs through the Gap Unit of Muralt Bluff Prairie SNA, providing views of the surrounding landscape from the open hill prairies. There are former agricultural fields (now planted by the Prairie Bluff Chapter to prairie) and some rich woods that volunteers and staff are working to restore. The Prairie Enthusiasts have done a lot of work clearing out sections of unwanted trees and brush from the site and we will continue that work on this day. If there is snow, there will be brush pile fires. Join State Natural Area (SNA) crews for this work party. Past winters we have worked here to clear dead and down wood and to thin the understory.  Workdays like this are a giant step in restoration, since SNA crews led by Bridget Rathman do the expert felling of unwanted trees and Prairie Bluffer Chapter Members do the rest: bucking up, hauling and burning the slash.  Another winter task at the Gap is treating a swarm of aspen trees encroaching upon the open prairies.
