ST. CROIX VALLEY field trip to an “in progress” prairie planting

Evanne and Greg planted their one-acre prairie in 1995 by hand broadcasting seeds.  They prepared the site by tilling the site for an entire summer.  The seeds were spread generally evenly over the site, but individually found their home; for example, the Leadplant and side oats gramma preferred the sandy soil in the back of the lot, the Culver’s Root preferred the mesic soil in the front.

The site has close neighbors on three sides.  Yearly prescribed burning has been accepted.
