Mukwonago River Oak Barrens Work Party
Thursday, October 29 – Noon to 3:00 p.m.
Location: Mukwonago River Oak Barrens in Waukesha County, WI
RSVP required to receive schedule changes, exact parking locations, and details of the day’s work. RSVPs are also needed, because snowy conditions are dynamic and may limit available parking. We will be doing whatever work is most appropriate for the weather. This may include pulling or cutting and treating brush, staging and burning burn piles, cutting trees, preparing fire breaks, and spreading seeds. We strive to promote the conditions and processes that promote the recovery of these communities, which means use of frequent dormant season prescribed fire and re-introducing plant species that have been lost within our work footprint.
DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Moderate to high. Terrain is level, but conditions may be snowy or wet, and footing may be uneven. Work areas may be up to a half mile walk each way through snow from parking locations. Pulling brush, cutting and treating brush, and burn pile work are moderately strenuous.
Bring drinking water. Wear sturdy, closed-toe footwear shoes and long sleeves. Bring work gloves and eye protection (glasses/sunglasses are fine), if you have them, but we also have extras. Feel free to bring your own tools that match the day’s activity. We can supply tools as well. If we plan on chemical treatment, appropriate training, chemical resistant gloves, and application equipment will be provided. If we burn piles, you will need outer layers made from natural fibers and a hat (we can also provide hard hats).

Grassland Cut and Stump Treat Scattered Small Trees
Saturday, November 14 – 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Location: Dane County, WI
This not yet officially named, 36-acre property in southwest Dane County has been purchased on behalf of The Prairie Enthusiasts by a benefactor organization while The Prairie Enthusiasts raises the funds for the purchase. In the meantime, we are beginning management of the site by removing tree cover. Contractors have been engaged using grant money to remove large trees and thick tall brush primarily along fence lines. This leaves numerous scattered small trees in the interior to be removed.
During this work party, we will begin to cut and stump treat small trees. The trees will be left where they fall to be collected and piled with a tractor at a later date. This will be relatively easy chainsaw work requiring no limbing of trees or piling. With enough people with chainsaws, we can make very good progress. Even small battery-powered chainsaws and mini saws would be useful for this work. People without saws could also be helpful.
WHAT TO BRING:
All workers should have work gloves and appropriate protective equipment. Bring water.
