Work Party at Holland Sand Prairie
Saturday, October 10 – 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Location: Holland Sand Prairie in Holmen, WI
Join the Coulee Region Chapter of The Prairie Enthusiasts and Friends of the Blufflands for this fall work party in partnership with UW-La Crosse students from Dr. Kaur’s class. We had a great experience with the students last fall and anticipate another valuable experience for volunteers and students this year. We need many volunteers to help so that we can keep the student to volunteer ratio low, so please join us!
This work party will primarily include cut-treat management and seed collecting.

Saturday, October 31 – 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Location: Wautoma, WI
Join us for this work party at White River Fisheries Area. The work will include hand cutting white pine saplings and hauling to pile.
Please note: There are no bathroom facilities on site.
LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY: Moderate climb to the work site.
WHAT TO BRING:
Water, insect repellent, hand-cutting tools, and work gloves.

Halloween Party!
Come kill the scary buckthorn!! Wear your favorite buckthorn killing costume!
We will be targeting buckthorn infestations in the oak woodland.
Date: October 31 (Saturday)
Time: 10am until about 2pm
Come for 1, 2, 3, or 4 hours — whatever time you can volunteer is appreciated.

Directions: Take highway 35 south towards River Falls.
Take highway 65 south (35 turns into 65) toward Ellsworth.
Gravel road entrance is on the right just after the Town of River Falls town hall.

Work day to kill Black Locust!
Black locust leaves
We will focus on controlling Black Locust. We will cut saplings and treat the stumps as we do to buckthorn. Larger diameter trees will he girdled and herbicide sprayed into the cuts.
Please bring electric chainsaws. Loppers will be provided.

Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) is native to the U.S., but not to the Upper Midwest. It is currently spreading into states like Minnesota that are outside of its historical range. Black locust primarily invades disturbed habitats, degraded woods, thickets and old fields, where it crowds out native vegetation and forms single species stands.
Black locust is a fast growing tree that can reach up to 75 feet in height. It has with deeply furrowed bark with flat-topped ridges. Seedlings and root sprouts have long thorns and grow rapidly.
