EMPIRE-SAUK: WEED SWEEP AT MOUNDS VIEW GRASSLAND

EMPIRE-SAUK: WEED SWEEP AT MOUNDS VIEW GRASSLAND

Weed Sweep at Mounds View Grassland

Weekdays in July – Anytime between 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Location: Mounds View Grassland in Barneveld, WI

Come spend walking through remnant and planted prairie looking for the last few scattered late blooming and previously missed sweetclover and even fewer wild parsnip, all the while hearing and seeing grassland birds and seeing up close a wide array of prairie flowers, butterflies, and bumblebees. We have these weeds almost gone from large portions of the Mounds View Grassland. It is critical that we get every last one before they set seed, so the problem does not come back. The intern crew is doing the bulk of the work, but they cannot do it all. Your help is important to getting those last few plants.

WHAT TO BRING:

Bring gloves, long pants, long-sleeved shirt, water, and hat. They are a necessity in doing this type of activity. Parsnip predators will be provided.

WORK PARTY LEADER:

For questions and to RSVP, contact Rich Henderson (h) 608-845-7065 (c) 608-235-4165.

DIRECTIONS:

(2906 County F, Barneveld, WI) MAP HERE

From the intersection of US Hwy 18-151 and County F (south of Blue Mounds in western Dane County), take F approximately 5 miles south. Turn right onto Reilly Road, proceed to parking lot and kiosks at the end of the road (past the barn).  (Note: A half mile down F from 18-151, pay close attention to the road signs, for F turns to the right & the straight-ahead road becomes County Z. Stay on F.)

ST CROIX VALLEY work party

Buckthorn!

Join us as we cut and stump treat buckthorn at Dieperink Woods (formerly called Brokken Woods).

Some loppers will be provided, but if you have your own, feel free to bring them.  We will also be walking around, looking for undiscovered flora.

Date: August 4  (Tuesday)
Time: 10am to 2pm
Location: Dieperink Woods (previously Brokken Woods)
Afton, MN

We will meet at the gate on the cul-de-sac at the south end of the property: at the far eastern end of 42nd St. S in Afton, MN. There is plenty of room to park.

Map to location

Bring:
♦ Dress appropriately for weather
♦ Drinking water

♦ Bring your lunch

After our lunch break, we will take a walk around the site, looking at what’s blooming, what’s making seeds, and looking for further effects of spring’s prescribed burns. Many cool season native grasses have or will soon bloom, and we can check on their progress. Poke milkweed emerged in large numbers after the burn and may still be in bloom.
