Owned Sites
Lands owned by The Prairie Enthusiasts are permanently protected from development. We are committed to preserving and managing the lands we own in perpetuity. While we engage contractors and hire people directly, the majority of the management of our lands is done by volunteers. This connects people from all walks of life and ignites their relationship to the land.

Nearly all of these sites are open to the public. There are some restrictions and prohibited activities. These threatened ecosystems are protected for the preservation and conservation of nature and are critical habitat for rare and declining species. As such, some activities that may degrade the habitat are not allowed. Permitted activities vary per site depending on the funding sources and management objectives. If an activity is not explicitly allowed, it is prohibited. Please check each site pages below for details.
NOTE: There are sites that are worthy of management despite no land protection through ownership or easement. Such work preserves the quality of the site and hopefully, protection can be attained in the future. Some of these sites are listed under chapter webpages or noted on our events calendar.

Use the information below to learn more about our sites or visit a chapter page to find sites in a specific area.
NOTE: If you are an organized group looking to visit a site, please contact the site steward beforehand. This can ensure no major land management or other activity is occurring at the same time. It’s also possible that the site steward would be available to introduce the site or answer the group’s questions if the group so wishes.
Protected Properties in Alphabetical Order
Filter by difficulty
Easy includes sites where there are maintained paths and/or have flat ground.
Moderate includes sites that have a few inclines, and may or may not have maintained paths. These do not include extremely steep or challenging areas.
Difficult includes sites that may have steep goat prairies, wet fens or otherwise challenging terrain.
The Prairie Enthusiasts Calendar of Events
Each year, members from all across the organization gather togetherfor some very special events. Chapters offer field trips, work parties, workshops or other events specific to that chapter’s focus and interests.
View events on the The Prairie Enthusiasts calendar or seek information on events from your local chapter. Join us in connecting with each other and the land as we care for prairies and savannas.
